US reporter detention a 'fiasco', says Iran's human rights chief

In an interview with FRANCE 24, the secretary of Iran's Human Rights Council, Mohammad Javad Larijani, discusses the detention of Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian. The Iranian-American journalist has been held in Iran without charge since July.

Larijani says he hopes Rezaian's case will be presented to court "as soon as possible".

"Let us hope that this fiasco will end on good terms," he added.

Larijani also expressed hope that the house arrest of opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi will soon come to an end.

Larijani declined to confirm US reports that Iran had carried out airstrikes against the Islamic State group in Iraq.

"We do not endorse this claim by the Pentagon," he said.
